The Word of God says “Walk in the light and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh” and “follow Christ to have the light of life”.
Lets face it and be honest, if you don’t stay on guard, you can get caught up in the lust of the flesh, which is many things, not just lustful or inappropriate sexual thoughts or feelings towards another person, it might be lust for money, power, being self centered, things that draw us away from the realization of the good things that The Lord has given us and set before us. For example, we have what we need but not necessarily always what we want, we have happiness but want euphoria, we have rest but want to be lazy, we want indulgence when we often have what we need.
Why does God want us to be content? Why not have more and more? Because while having and desiring more is fine, we must be careful not to go overboard or we will always be in pursuit of something or someone to be happy and never find it. We can always pursue more of Jesus.
John 8:12 “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
If we find ourselves wanting more and more, how about more of Jesus and His goodness, how about the true goodness of life, how about peace, joy, self-control, less stress if you are overly stressed, hope, faith, and wholesome friendships, things as the fruit of the Spirit of which there is no law against. Love God and your neighbor that’s a good law.
The light of life is the goodness of God, Jesus says follow Him and we can find it. God is not limited in how or when or how much He blesses us with His goodness now or in the life to come, follow Him, not self. Let’s face it, the truth is life is not without hurt, struggle or pain, in those cases, the goodness of God could also be receiving help in the storms of life, friends when we need them most, encouragement, strength, courage and hope.
If it’s not sin, or extreme hardships by the impact of living in a fallen world, it is probably the goodness of life. Not to diminish our pain or extreme hardships, we know there are times in life that we don’t understand or are hard to bare, major hurt, sickness and loss, but what we do know is that seeking God’s goodness should be what we long for, regardless of our circumstances. There is life on the other side of the cross. Who would not want love, hope, faith, peace, encouragement, support, strength, courage, and trust even in the storms of life.
