To answer the question of our subject today “Where are the abundant blessings?”, the answer is:  They are found in being obedient in following Jesus Christ. Christians are called by God and instructed in His Word to be faithful to Him and observe His commandments and instruction. Why? The most obvious reason should be because He is God and He knows best, other reasons are it will make us a better person and better equip us to live life to the fullest, and because God always blesses our obedience to Him.

Luke 11: 27-28  “As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you. He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

Notice the word “Blessed”, Jesus is speaking directly about the significance of obeying God.

As a preacher, I have learned a few things through the years by experience and in the study of God’s Word. Many of those things pertain to God’s blessings. There are three fundamental truths pertaining to blessings that we need to realize. God wants to bless His children, we cannot dictate to God how or when He blesses, and God does not bless disobedience.

As Christians, we will want to serve God out of gratitude for the Salvation that He gives through Jesus Christ, and in response to the leading of The Holy Spirit, and because it brings glory and honor to Him.

Because of His Grace and our Love for Him, we will want to learn of Him, worship Him, and follow Him, and enjoy His many blessings. It’s concerning though that many Christians don’t realize the many blessings they are missing by not doing things such as that to glorify God.

There are however certain blessings that we receive almost no matter what we do. The Greatest Blessing available to everyone is that God sent Jesus to die for our sins to offer eternal life to those who will accept the Gospel. Other blessings that God has put in place are things such as the sunrise and sunset, Mountain View’s, the beauty in flowers and changing seasons. God also can choose to bless us in an effort to show us His love and to remind us to follow Him or He may give us a taste of His goodness just because He wants to show us His good nature. He may surround us with good people to show us the importance of being good or because we need help in life due to great loss or to bring us strength. We also are blessed by things like enjoying warmth and electricity, sunshine and rain, and a nice breeze.

However, in contrast to the total blessings available to us, those are only a very small amount compared to what our Father God, Lord Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit want to do for us.

The ultimate and absolute truth: God will not pour out the fullness of His blessings when we do not do what He wants us to do. Here are a few misconceptions.

1.  I can find God in His fullness without seeking Him. False

Matthew 7:7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

God through His Holy Spirit often draws us to Him, He convicts us, He teaches us, comforts us etc. and lives inside the believer. But He has also told us we can seek Him and find Him. If we don’t seek God to become closer to Him, we are missing a blessing, one of which is to please God.

Seek The Lord and be blessed!

2.  I can have the fullness of fellowship with God when I consistently live wrong. False

I John 1:6 “ If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth”.

Walk with Lord and be blessed!

3.  My faith is strong although I do not obey God. False

James 2:17 “Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”

Work for the Lord and be blessed, hear the Word and grow in faith and be blessed!

4.  I am under God’s Grace so I don’t have to live right. False.

Romans 6:14 “For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.”

The Bible says we are to walk in the light not darkness, and that a good tree will yield good fruit.

Walk in the Light with the Lord and be blessed!

5.  God is not interested in my works. False.

Ephesians 2:10 “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

God shapes the world and brings about His Will in part by the work He does through us.

Work and support the work of the Lord and be blessed!

6.  Church is not really that important. False

Hebrews 10:24-25 “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

(God does realize there are situations where we cannot be at Church, the writers point is to realize God created a place for us to worship Him and God expects us to be there when we can, He is Always there. It is important to gather with others to learn and to worship God and to be encouraged in the faith, and to please God)

To Worship God at Church is a significant way to please the Lord Jesus and to position yourself to be blessed.

Worship God in His house and be blessed!

7.  If God requires us to work at living right and to serve Him, means you are not saved by Grace.  False.

Ephesians 2:8-10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Live for Jesus because you are a child of God, the same Grace that saves us also changes us, be blessed.

We serve God and obey Him because we are saved and want to follow Him.

We serve Him because we have a personal relationship with Him.

We worship Him because He is deserving and worthy of our praise and honor.

God blesses obedience, put yourself in a position to be blessed by believing in Him, listening to Him, following Him, worshipping Him, and obeying Him.
